More Kudos for Crossing Vineyards' Chardonnay
The Beverage Testing Institute recently conducted a “Chardonnay Challenge” at its Tasting Lab in Chicago. 72 Chardonnays were evaluated, all from the United States. The wines were blind tasted and flighted according to grape origin.
Crossing Vineyards’ 06 Chardonnay earned 85 points out of a possible 100 on the rating scale, earning a silver medal and a rating of “Highly Recommended.”
Tasting notes provided by the Judges, including wine experts, beverage writers, and buyers within the industry, described Crossing Vineyards’ ‘06 Chardonnay as having “a rich golden color” and “dryish medium body” with “aromas of yeast pastry dough, white peach, and tilled earth.”
Priced at $17, Crossing’s Chardonnay proved to be quite a bargain when compared with other silver medal winners in the competition, whose costs ranged as high as $50 per bottle (Mayacamas 2001 Chardonnay from Napa Valley, CA)
The Beverage Testing Institute was founded in 1981 with the objective of producing fair and impartial wine reviews for consumers. Over the years its buying guides have appeared in The Wine Enthusiast, Restaurant Hospitality, The New Yorker Magazine, Wine & Spirits, International Wine Review, Epicurious.com.

LA TIMES spotlights Crossing Vineyards in article on wine competitions
In her August 22 article in The LA Times, Corie Brown talks about the nature of wine competitions and how they can often produce unexpected results. Included in her story is a mention of Philadelphia restaurateur Evan Lambert and his launching of the prestigious Starwine International Wine Competition three years ago. Says Ms. Brown:
“…(Lambert) gathers an international panel of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and veteran wine stewards for a three-day event in New York City where, this year, they tasted 1,200 wines from U.S. and international wineries…The wines that are awarded the top "best of class" award have been tasted by 15 judges and have included such well-known wines as Domaine Jacques Prieur Puligny-Montrachet and Peter Lehmann Barossa Valley.
And, still, there are surprises among the Starwine medal winners. Against wines from around the world, a Bucks County, Pa., wine won best-of-class Chardonnay last October. It's a wine made by former Los Angeles actor Tom Carroll, 31, who talked his parents into planting grapes on their dairy farm in the Delaware River Valley in 2002. Carroll has a publicist now to get the word out about his award-winning wine.”

Crossing's Estate Series Debuts with a Bronze at International Eastern Wine Competition
One of the oldest and largest competitions in the United States, IEWC is held each May in the Finger Lakes regions of New York, attracting over 2,100 entries in recent years with wines from 16 countries and 34 states.
The IWEC has earned a well-justified reputation for the quality of its organization, judgments and awards. Wines in any given flight may be entered from around the world. Judges are wine-knowledgeable professionals, media specialists, and winemakers who represent major east coast markets from Miami to Toronto. Bronze medals require a unanimous panel vote, so any medals awarded in the IWEC are worthy of merit.
"We are gratified to win a bronze at IWEC for CVW's first Estate Series wine," said Tom Carroll, Jr., winemaker. "This Late Harvest Vidal is made from 100% estate fruit, which makes this honor especially meaningful. We're "getting it right in the vineyard", which is CVW's top priority."

Philadelphia Magazine Touts Crossing Vineyards' for the "Chardonnay the Bested the World"
In 2005, the Starwine International Wine Competition awarded top honors in the chardonnay category to the 2002 1st Cru Puligny-Montrachet for Domaine Jacques Prieur - from France. Of course.
But when the 45 sommeliers judging the 2006 competition tallied their scores, an unexpected winner emerged. The "Best in Class" distinction was bestowed on the 2005 Crossing Vineyards chardonnay - from Pennsylvania. Somehow, Pennsylvania-grown grapes and - mon dieu! - Pennsylvania-oak aging had produced a chardonnay that beat out those from far more respected wine regions, including California, New Zealand and, yes, France."I don't know who was more surprised: us when we found out we won or the judges when they pulled our wine out of the brown bag," says Crossing Vineyards winemaker Tom Carroll Jr., who credits 2005's warm, dry growing season for the wine's intense flavor. The judges described Crossing Vineyards' European-style 2005 chardonnay, just the fourth vintage the Bucks County winery has produced, as "fruity with hints of citrus and green apple." But most PA wine lovers will have to take their word for it. At $17 a bottle, the chard, available only from the winery, sold out almost immediately after it became award-winning wine.Well, maybe there are a few cases left for special winery events, Carroll
admits. He plans to pour the coveted chardonnay at Crossing Vineyard's next reservation-only dinner on March 17th.Meet the Winemakers Dinner. $85 (plus tax and gratuity). Crossing Captures Top Gold, Best of Class in Major International Wine Competition
Crossing’s 05 Chardonnay was honored with a “Top Gold, Best of Class” award in this prestigious international competition, which included wine submissions from 15 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and the United States. Out of the over 1200 wines entered, only 16 (or 1.4%) received the distinction “Best of Class.”
A wine capturing “Top Gold & Best of Class” in this competition is defined as “…deserving of exceptional recognition. A ‘Best of Class’ wine has earned a gold award, but displays attributes which surpass any other gold medal winner in its category. A ‘Best of Class’ is granted only if a wine represents the highest level of achievement within its type when evaluated by international standards, and not by criteria specific to any one region.”
The competing wines were evaluated by 45 Sommelier/Judges from 10 different countries: Austria, Canada, China, France, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands and the U.S.
11 judges are members of the distinguished Court of Master Sommeliers (MS), and 7 have attained their Master of Wine (MW) from the renowned Institute of Masters of Wine.
The other judges were selected based on their outstanding reputations and strong experience within the wine industry as sommeliers at some of the world’s top restaurants.
A 2002 1st Cru Puligny-Montrachet from Domaine Jacques Prieur, Les Combettes parcel in Burgundy, captured the Top Gold, Best of Class award for Chardonnay in Starwine’s 2005 competition.
“We knew ’05 was a great year for PA whites, but we never dreamed our Chardonnay would win over submissions from 15 countries around the world,”said Tom Carroll, Jr., one of the state’s youngest winemakers “This is a great day for Pennsylvania wines.”

"Everything the Carroll family does is first class," Mr. Newman said. "If any

Four More Crossing Vineyards's Wines Approved by
Pennsylvania Quality Assurance Program
In September 2003, Pennsylvania's Premium Wine Group introduced its
Pennsylvania Quality Assurance program (PQA) as a way of winning
consumers' confidence in the high quality of Pennsylvania wines. To wear the PQA
seal, a Pennsylvania wine must be made from Pennsylvania grown vinifera
grapes and must meet certain technical standards, including approval by a panel of
highly respected experts in the wine industry.
Four additional Crossing Vineyards' wines were recently approved by the
PQA's tasting panel at its March evaluation: '03 Cabernet Franc, '03Cabernet
Sauvignon, '03 Chardonnay, '03 Viognier
"We were thrilled," says Tom Carroll Jr. Crossing Vineyards' vintner,
one of the youngest winemakers in the state of Pennsylvania. "We are committed
to the PQA's goal of raising consumer awareness about Pennsylvania wines
and proving that our products can compare favorably to high quality
vinifera wines from around the world."

Crossing Vineyards Captures Bronze at the Starwine 2005 International Wine Competition
The Starwine International Wine Competition, produced by the
Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board in conjunction with Starwine, brings together the
world's top sommeliers and tasters to judge wines from all over the
world.
The mission of the Starwine International Wine Competition is to give
wine consumers a reliable measure of wine quality through an impartial
evaluation process.
In the 2005 Competition recently held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in
Phildelphia, Crossing Vineyards captured a bronze medal for its '03
Chardonnay.
"We are willing to work very hard to establish a regional identity for
Pennsylvania wines," says Tom Carroll Jr., vintner at Crossing
Vineyards and winery. "Our vinifera varietals taste different from California's, not
inferior. I have no interest in imitating the mass-produced,
mass-marketed California wine style."

The 28-year-old Carroll brings his passion and enthusiasm to the local wine industry at a time when it seems poised to break into the big time. "It's exciting to see what's happening here," he says. "People are more adventurous about wine and want to see what's going on in their own backyard."

The 2002 Apple wine ($10.99), made from Winesap, York and Granny Smith apples, is surprisingly floral, with delicate candied-fruit flavors.
...
My favorite is the 2002 Cabernet Franc ($20.99), an elegant and complex wine with heady aromas redolent of cedar and spice, rich luscious cassis/berry flavors, and beautiful balance.

Vineyards and wineries have begun dotting Pennsylvania's landscape over the past couple decades, and growers and officials within the state are looking toward the future through grape-colored glasses.
"In the '60s, people were asking, 'Grapes in California? Good wine is only made in Europe,' " said Christine Carroll, one of the owners of Crossing Vineyards and Winery in Washington Crossing. "Now they're making world-class wines. We like to see ourselves as the California of the 2000s."
